They’re
saving the best (the BIG reveal) for last but this penultimate episode is not without a few
surprises of its own.
EPISODE 8 RECAP
Jasmine
shoves a bookshelf, that’s separating her to Maskara, and it falls on him. She
immediately escapes and runs right to Jacinto’s arms, who just arrived at the
scene. After checking that she’s unharmed, he goes inside and gets furious because
Maskara is nowhere to be found. Equally furious is Agila who followed him
there, they take turns blaming each other for losing Maskara.
Jasmine stays
at the police station for the meantime and is happy to see Alexis while he’s
relieved that she’s safe. Jasmine is frustrated that Maskara managed to escape
once again and if it weren’t for our Rogue duo, she would have been dead by
now.
Alexis promises to protect her and will never leave her again. Steven
arrives and hugs Jasmine in relief; he mentions that he saw Osorio and Jacinto
in handcuffs just now and asks her why they’re being interrogated.
Our Rogue duo
is charged with multiple offenses with Agila even adding that they’re worse
criminals than Maskara. Agila and the chief accuses them of being Maskara’s
accomplice and Jacinto figures out what they’re doing; they want to make him
and Osorio their scapegoat.
Suddenly,
Jasmine interrupts and demands the chief to let our Rogue duo go and if they
don’t, she threatens to go the press to tell them how many of their police
operations have failed. The chief has no choice but to comply.
Outside,
Jacinto tells Jasmine he now knows why Ramirez trusted her so much because she
makes a great (police)partner. They joke about him being a drunkard and they both
declare to catch Maskara no matter what. She sincerely thanks him for all his
help and bids him goodbye.
At home, while
Alexis is making their dinner, Carly gets teary-eyed as she tells Jasmine how
worried they were at the thought of never seeing her again. Jasmine comforts
her and says that everything’s alright now and they’ll eventually catch
Maskara.
Carly tells
her how Alexis has been sleepless ever since she was kidnapped and how he spent
all night trying to find her, “If there’s anyone more obsessed with you than
Maskara, it’s definitely Alexis.”
Steven is
busy dealing with the press, repeatedly turning down interviews for Jasmine
citing that she’s not yet in the condition to talk about the kidnapping
incident. Suddenly, ominous music plays, the phone call gets cut off, followed
by the lights flickering and Maskara is seen in the background.
Maskara
slowly approaches Steven from behind who is completely shocked to even move or
call for help. Maskara: “I see you're working hard, you really are that greedy
for money.” As he threateningly wields a crowbar to his face, he adds: “Tell
Jasmine that our game is over, I’ll hurt everyone she loves the most.” And then
he whacks Steven in the head with the crowbar.
Jacinto
continues working on Maskara’s case, making diagrams on his blackboard. He
smiles in satisfaction as he gets closer to solving the case. He grabs a bottle
of rum, looks up and says, “This is for you Ramirez.” And he pours the alcohol
on the floor.
Steven is
found, by his assistant Leila, sitting on his desk with a bloody head. Leila
shrieks in horror. Luckily he’s alive, though badly wounded, he tells Jasmine
what Maskara told him. He warns her that Maskara is out to get all of them.
Jasmine meets
with our Rogue duo as they talk about Maskara. They’re now more determined,
more than ever, to catch him. Jacinto takes Jasmine to meet Jonas(Elaine’s
brother) and they tell him more about Paulo/Maskara. He idolized a lot of
celebrity and like his mother, he was into showbiz. Just as Elaine was about to
start her acting career, she got pregnant with Paulo.
Paulo became
a huge hindrance to her career and she always blamed him for it. She took out
all her anger by verbally and physically abusing Paulo. Jasmine asks to see
pictures of Paulo but Jonas tells her that Paulo doesn’t take self-pictures,
all he know is Paulo and Jasmine know each other and they already meet before,
he adds that Paulo’s appearance has changed since then.
He shows them
an old video clip where Paulo is singing while his mom is recording him. Paulo
forgets the lyrics and Elaine harshly chastises him.
Jasmine goes
back to Maskara’s lair alone (are you kidding me?) and she surveys the place looking
for something. She sees that Maskara’s wall of crazy has also pictures of his
mom, Elaine, with a newspaper clipping of her death (caused by suicide).
Jasmine calls
Carly to share what she found out as Carly warns her to get out of there now!
Girl, I’ll listen to her if I was you. Jasmine tells her that Elaine hid Paulo
from everyone she knows but it looks like Paulo still loves his mom despite
everything.
Osorio and
Agila visit Jonas and they’re shocked to find him lifeless on the floor with
the words ‘Traitor’ written on his own blood.
They report
it in to the Chief as he warns that this information shouldn’t leak to the
press. Jacinto walks in and shares what he found out. Paulo/Maskara changed
houses frequently and in 2011 when he started working for TV5, he mysteriously
disappeared from the system. That same year, Jasmine also started working for
TV5.
Jasmine meets
with the TV5 heads and they give her a plane ticket to the US so she can lay
low until the police catch Maskara. She refuses to go citing that she can’t
just leave her loved ones when she’s the one Maskara is after.
Jasmine and
Carly asks Wendell for access to TV5’s video archives, although he’s afraid they’ll
get caught, he agrees to help them.
Alexis
confronts Jasmine about her helping Jacinto, he doesn’t trust the guy but
Jasmine assures him that Jacinto’s a big help to her. Alexis wants to help her
too but Jasmine just tells him that he’s already done more than enough for her
and she doesn’t want him to get hurt. They tell each other to be careful.
Carly and
Wendell watch the Mutya ng Maynila video.
Wendell asks, in a suspicious tone, if this will really help with the case and
Carly replies that she’s not really sure. Wendell leaves her alone to get a USB
so they can copy the video.
Jasmine
brought lunch for our Rogue duo and Osorio is more than happy to dig in joking
that Jacinto is starving him. Jasmine thanks Jacinto for all his help and he
thanks her too. He tells her that he’s the one who convinced Ramirez to join
the police force but he himself quit.
Because of
her insistence and prodding, he realized that this(police work) is what he
really wants to do. Osorio interrupts as they happily toast drinks(just water
since Jacinto quit drinking).
Carly turns
around and she sees Maskara lurking around and only a glass window is separating
them. She hides out of sight and calls Jasmine, mentioning that she was just
with Wendell earlier.
Jasmine, our
Rogue duo and Agila’s team immediately goes to the TV5 building to rescue her. Agila
briefs his team with their rescue operation and they go inside. Jacinto insists
on going with them but he’s stopped by Agila who tells him that he can’t come
because he’s a civilian.
So, he and
Jasmine enter the building by using a secret passageway. Meanwhile, Carly tries
to find a way out but all exits are blocked and she tries calling someone for
help but the lines are busy.
Jasmine calls
Alexis who wonders why everyone is asked to evacuate. Jasmine tells him it’s
because Maskara is inside the building.
Carly is
grabbed by Wendell who asks her if she saw Maskara, she fearfully replies yes.
He leads her to the fire exit so they can escape.
The SWAT team
carefully surveys all the floors and they come upon Wendell in the fire exit who
looks like he’s been beaten. Wendell tells them that Maskara took Carly and
went to the basement parking. They quickly alert the other rescue team.
Maskara is in
fact in the basement parking. Agila’s team sees him and they positioned themselves
with guns ready.
But something
is off, Maskara’s(?) hands are duct taped and he’s wielding a knife on the right
hand as he tries to remove his mask.
The police
shout at Maskara(?) to raise his hands as Jasmine, picking up Carly’s glasses
on the floor, frantically screams at them, “Don't shoot! It’s not Maskara, its
Carly.” Jacinto stops Jasmine from approaching Carly, afraid that she’ll get
hurt.
Carly waves
her arms to warn them that she’s not Maskara then suddenly someone shoots and
the rest of the team follows. Bang! Bang! Bang! Jasmine screams over and over
again that it’s Carly.
Carly falls to
the ground. Finally, someone calls out to cease fire. Jasmine hurriedly runs to
Carly and she removes the mask to reveal that her mouth was also duct taped.
Jasmine cries for her friend as our Rogue duo and Agila’s team can only look on.
Jasmine screams for medical help but it’s too late, Carly’s dead.
COMMENTS
WTH just
happened? The last scene was just utter chaos in a good way because it’s a
surprising way to up the stakes. The police are outsmarted once again and this
time they’re responsible for a civilian’s death.
And in a bad
way too because that scene was just awfully executed, did everyone needed to fire?
Carly wasn’t even approaching them, they were going towards her with Jasmine repeatedly
screaming that it wasn’t Maskara. Even if it was for defense, all they needed
was one shot to incapacitate him and more than one is considered murder.
Just
like I dreaded, Wendell IS Maskara. There’s no doubt about it now. Sigh! I was really
hoping for a plot twist or something more shocking. It saddens me that they’re
saving the reveal for the finale because I have so many questions which I’m
sure are gonna be left unanswered.
By revealing
your antagonist’s real identity at the last minute, you're automatically making
him a simple cookie-cutter villain whose only there to make our main characters’
lives terrible because we barely scratched the surface; he stalks, taunts and
kills, all because of his so called ‘love’ for Jasmine (and also because he has
mommy issues).
If the reveal
was sooner, say episode 6, then we could have seen Wendell possibly regretting
his actions but ultimately caving to his dark side. I mean, how he can just do
that to Carly without feeling even a tiny bit of remorse, they were close
friends and he knows what she means to Jasmine, he probably did feel guilty but we
weren’t given a chance to see it.
