Episode 98: The End of an Affair (Final Episode)

After paying Adrian’s hospital bill, Monica spots Nicole’s car in the parking lot, she wonders if she’s here right now and then she notices something inside the car. She breaks the window with a rock and carries an unconscious Jacob to the ER.

Nicole, after her talk with Adrian, cries in the hallway. She finally answers the phone call from the yaya. Knowing Jacob is inside the car, she rushes down to the parking lot but she’s already too late; Jacob is already gone, she immediately proceeds to the ER.

Thankfully, Jacob’s fine and Nicole couldn't be more relieved. The nurse motions her to the lady who saved Jacob and she sees Monica sitting on a bench. They exchange meaningful looks. A little while later, they talk on the hallway.

Nicole: “I’ve been a bad mother and a bad friend, but you still saved my child. You had the option to not save him because he’s the only remaining connection I have with Adrian. But you still did, why?”

Monica: “Because I know myself and I’m not that kind of person.”

Nicole: “If I was the one trapped inside, would you still save me too?”

Monica doesn’t answer her question but instead tells her to take care of Jacob.

Monica: “Love your child because he’s your only hope. He’s the only one who can give you the love you’ve long been searching for.”

Nicole breaks down and she repeatedly tells Monica that she’s sorry. She’s sorry for everything she’d done. She knows Monica will never forgive her but she hopes that someday she’ll accept her as a friend again.

Monica doesn’t say anything and just leaves Nicole who's still crying.

Nicole apologizes to Jacob for what happened and tells him that she loves him so much.

Adrian checks out of the hospital and his family, together with Monica and their kids, throw him a welcome home party complete with a banner and confetti’s.

Nicole visits her dad and they have a meaningful conversation.

Nicole: “For a very long time, I’ve closed my heart for you because I know that I’m not the daughter you wanted. But I tried, because I wanted to be your daughter. When I was little, I’ve always wondered how it felt to be loved by your dad. Today, I’d almost lost my son so I told myself: What the heck am I doing?”

“I decided that I’ve had enough, I’m tired of always begging to be loved so from this point forward I’m gonna pour all my love and affection only for Jacob.”

Nicole tells Dante that they’re gonna go live in Australia to start a new life.

Dante: “I wish there are other word beside ‘Sorry’ and ‘Forgive me’. I want you to know that I also wanted to be your dad. Ever since then, I wanted to if you only gave me a chance. But, it’s not too late, we can start again.”

Nicole: “I don’t know how to.”

Dante: “We can start with Jacob.”

Nicole: “Dad.” 

They embrace in a tearful and heartfelt hug.

Monica and her mom have a heart to heart talk too.

Eloisa asks Monica what happens now between her and Adrian. Everyone keeps asking her the same thing, why are they not back together especially when they have 2 kids and it seems like the right thing to do. Eloisa asks her is she still loves him.

Monica: “Yes, I love him so much. He’s really the only one for me and if I could just forget the past, I would. All I want is for our family to be whole again but when I married Adrian, I thought I married a man with integrity, I’ve thought highly of him and that’s why when he had an affair, it hurt so much.”

“I was completely broken, I had nothing left. I tried so hard to fix myself and I thought 3 years was enough but when I held Jacob, everything came back; all of the pain and fear.”

“That’s why I keep asking myself: Can I endure anymore of this? Because fear is consuming me; what if it happens again? I’m not the only one who will get hurt. I saw how it affected Bunjoy and I don’t want Martina to  experience that too. I don’t want my kids to get hurt.”

“Mom weren’t you in this same situation before: Even though you loved Papa(Dante) so much, you still chose to be with Dad(Javier) no matter how hard it was, you sacrificed yourself for us, for the sake of your children. So, Mom if you tell me now to go back to Adrian for the sake of our kids, I would.”

Eloisa doesn’t say a word and just pulls Monica for a tight hug.

Monica tells Adrian that they’re leaving for America soon. Adrian promises to visit them as many times as he can and Monica does the same. He can't bear the thought of being away from them. Monica bids him goodbye but Adrian calls her back.

Adrian: “You know I was ready to face death. I’ve accepted that as my fate because this is my entire fault anyway. If I was gonna die, without you by my side, I would've also accepted that.”

“But, amidst the darkness, I heard your voice. I told myself that I had a reason to live again because you were still there. Because of you and our children, I fought through. But, still, I got scared; what if I wake up and you weren’t there? What if it was just a dream?”

“But, when I woke up, you were really there. Thank you so much for being there.”

Monica: “Because I still love you. But, I don’t want to love you with doubt hanging over my head and I know that’s what we both deserve. All or nothing at all.”

“Sometime ago, I gave you everything but you just took it for granted. That’s why I want to love you without all the pain, without all the anger.”

Adrian tells her to take care of herself and their kids in America. He bids her a goodbye as he walks away. But, this time, she’s the one who calls him back.

She gives Adrian his wedding ring back and she tells him to take good care of it because someday, the time will come when he might have the chance to put it on her finger again.

They smile and Monica plants a sweet kiss on his cheek. They part ways but they both look back and share a very meaningful smile.

EPISODE THOUGHTS

I don't really a have a lot to say. I'm already spent from watching, re-watching and recapping so I'm just gonna let the episode speak for itself.

Was I proven wrong? Well, yes and no. There was no obligatory narration and no montage of all the characters at the end, a cliche I'm glad they avoided, but the episode still felt rushed. It felt weirdly satisfying and disappointing at the same time, maybe because I wanted more from the last scene and less from some? But, I'm so glad that the ending really did fit with the whole theme and narrative of the show so it can't be all bad.

I love that it's a realistic, open-ending and it was even partly based from what I said last episode; that time heals all wounds. They both needed the separation to figure things out individually and after they do, well that's always open to interpretation but based from the knowing smile they shared at the end, one could guess that they will eventually get their happy ending.
