RareJob: Tips for passing the Demo Lesson Part 2

It was my day off and I did some late spring cleaning and I found an old notebook that had my notes during the time I conducted my demo lesson and it had a few helpful tips.

It’s as important to pass the test call and not just the demo lesson. Because if you fail the test call, you will have to reschedule. According to my notes, I almost failed my test call because I had an issue with my microphone.

According to my notes, I got lucky because my RareJob evaluator was actually nice. She had a very friendly voice but she maintained a professional tone for the entire demo lesson. I do remember that and I also remembered part of why I was so nervous.
Nag research rin kasi ako online for tips during my application process. Ang rami ko nabasa na strict daw yung mga evaluator and hindi daw nagbibigay ng constructive advice sa feedback. Puro lang daw mga negative comments during the lesson kaya same lang naging performance nila nung pangalawang demo lesson or role play.
Maswerte lang talaga ako na mabait yung evaluator ko! Before the lesson role play, may short introduction muna. She asked me to describe myself, why I want to teach and etc. Then we proceeded with the 1st role play.
Nerve-wracking talaga and “aligaga” pa ako nun! Na mention ko na before na sablay yung 1st  lesson ko so my evaluator had a lot of feedback with my performance. Which I listened to and used to improve my performance for the 2nd lesson.
Note: Your demo lesson evaluator and “student” are the same person. During the demo, he/she will pretend to be a Japanese student. Sometimes he/she might role play as a shy beginner student or an intermediate office worker. It depends so it’s best to prepare yourselves.
o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o
Establish rapport or connection
Use the introduction to do this. Don’t just state your name then move on with the lesson! Mention your hobbies and interests. Same with the student. if she only tells you her name, ask her if she has any hobbies and interest and try to sound interested!
Listen to the student
After the student answers the exercise questions, ask her follow-up questions related to her answer. This shows that you’re listening and you’re interested.
Don’t skip questions!
Never skip any exercise questions. Ask all the questions in the lesson material. If the student doesn’t know how to answer or if she’s having a hard time in understanding the question then you have to explain it in simpler terms.
Make the demo lesson student-centered
If you like to talk a lot, you have to refrain during the demo. Because in actual RareJob classes, you will encounter students who love to talk. And some of those students don’t like to be interrupted because they sign up for classes so they can practice their communication skills and they would appreciate it if someone will listen and only correct them during the feedback near the end of class.
Apply the 70/30 talk ratio. Give the student (70%) more opportunity to speak up.

Take note of the time!
It’s okay if you extend the allotted time for each segment (ex. long introduction) just as long as you end with a wrap-up and feedback!
Utilize the chat box!
If you correct the student’s sentence, do it verbally after you type it in the chat box.
Ex:
You said: My hobby is traveling and playing basketball.
Correct: My hobbies *are* traveling and playing basketball.
Also do this if you introduce a new word, provide the meaning and sample sentence.
Ex:
Benevolent - kind and helpful
Ex: Giving to charity is a benevolent deed.
Typing everything in the chat box is very important because it’s useful for the student. Actual RareJob students use them to study and review after classes.
No dead air!
This is very important! Dead air or long silences is probably one of the reason a lot of applicants fail. There should be no silence (for at least no more than 5 seconds) during the entire lesson. An actual RareJob class is only 25 minute per lesson slot. So it is very important to maximize the time. Every second counts!

o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o
When the time is up for your 1st lesson or role play, the evaluator will immediately give you his/her feedback. Use this break to focus and listen well! Listen to everything your evaluator is saying! Forget how nervous you feel and prepare yourself instead!
If you can, write down notes! Especially the areas you need to improve on according to the feedback.
In my case, I was correcting the student too much instead of listening to her answers. That resulted in me forgetting the time limit and I wasn’t able to fully follow the lesson flow (no wrap-up or feedback!).
I also wasn’t able to utilize the chat box. I was able to provide sample sentences but I didn’t type it in the chat box.
I was really nervous during the 1st role play and I was aware that I performed terribly so I focused and applied the feedback I got for the 2nd role play.
Dapat gamitin niyo yung 2nd demo lesson to improve your performance kasi yun yung 2nd and last chance niyo. Dun makikita nung evaluator kung nakikinig ba kayo sa instructions kasi yung mga RareJob lesson materials puno ng instructions on how to conduct each and every exercise portion of a specific material. Iba-iba kung paano I-handle yung classes so dapat magaling ka mag follow ng instructions.
Also sa 2nd role play tinitingnan rin kung paano mo mai-aapply yung feedback na binigay sa iyo. Gagamitin mo ba yun para I-improve yung performance mo o babalewalain mo na lang at hindi mo pakikinggan?
Before joining RareJob, I didn’t have any professional teaching experience whatsoever. But, I focused, I prepared and I did my best. And I guess I also got lucky! It’s almost 2 years since I’ve been teaching with RareJob and it has been a really great experience so far. The pay is okay (it could be better!) but teaching and learning with my students is really fun and surprisingly really fulfilling as well.
Ang saya-saya pag nakikita mo kung gaano nag improve yung students mo especially if within a short amount of time and pag ini-express nila kung gaano sila ka-grateful sayo dahil you helped them during the learning process.
So, I hope the tips I gave will help you pass the demo lesson and become a RareJob tutor like me.

RareJob: Tips for passing the Demo Lesson

Just click the image to sign up for RareJob :)

My personal experience during the application process:

I joined Rarejob almost 2 years ago (2016) but I can still remember the entire process.

After passing the proficiency test, I booked a schedule for the demo lesson but dalawang beses rin ako nagpa-reschedule kasi sobrang kinabahan ako.  Until I finally gathered enough courage to just say 'to hell with it'. Bahala na! Pass or Fail, wala namang mawawala kung i-try ko. If I pass then great! May bagong source of income but if I fail, ok lang rin! Atleast may bagong experience at pwede pa rin naman ulit akong mag-apply in 6 months.

I prepared for the demo lesson as best as I could because I really want to pass. Luckily, I did but I can still remember how nervous I was during the actual evaluation. One of the things you'll be evaluated in terms of proficiency is your grammar skill.

Kaso, nung demo sumablay yung grammar ko. Cinorrect ko yung "student" kasi mali yung sentence niya pero mali rin pala yung correction ko. Good thing for me, 1st lesson pa lang yun. So pwede pa ako makabawi sa 2nd lesson.

During the demo lesson, you'll be conducting 2 lessons with the same "student" pero may break in between. Kasi e-evaluate yung performance mo sa 1st lesson then bibigyan ka ng feedback na kailangan mo I-apply sa 2nd lesson.

I think kaya ako nakapasa (even though sablay talaga ako sa 1st lesson) dahil I followed the instructions and I applied the constrcutive feedback dun sa 2nd lesson ko.

I was instructed to mind the time kasi napa overtime ako sa 1st lesson. Kailangan pa nga ako I-remind ni "student" na time's up na! Hindi ako nakapag wrap-up and feedback!

Sobrang sablay talaga! Luckily, nakabawi ako sa 2nd lesson. I ended on time and mas na improve ko yung performance ko.

o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o

Review, review, review the demo lesson guide

Rarejob will provide eveything you need to prepare for the actual demo lesson so all you have to do is study it and review it as thoroughly as you can.

*Don't forget to confirm your attendance (via email) one day before your schedule

Technical requirements:

Check your equipment (Computer or Laptop, Headset with Microphone and Webcam)

*Don't use your smartphone or tablet computer. Just don't! Mas mahihirapan lang kayo if yun gagamitin niyo kasi pwede kayo ibagsak during the test call and kailangan niyo mag reschedule ulit ng demo lesson.

Familiarize yourself with Skype

Skype lang ang ginagamit para makapag conduct ng lesson so make sure na alam niyo kung paano gamitin ito. Mas maganda kung alam niyo rin yung mga shortcuts.

Check your Internet Connection

In my opinion, ito yung pinaka importante sa lahat! According sa Demo guide, ito yung minimum speed requirement:

Naalala ko na ang bagal ng connection namin dati courtesy of PLDT! pero nakaraos lng nmn during the demo kahit na minsan nag ha-hang yung video feed ko.

During the lesson, kailangan naka-on yung video mo pero naka-off kay "student" so kailangan talaga na mabilis at stable yung connection mo.

Pero if tutor ka na pwede na audio lesson na lng. Kaso sayang yung video incentive!

Demo rules and lesson flow:

Don't be late! Kung pwede nga na online ka 2 hours before the demo. Sige go! Nung demo ko ang aga ko nag online kasi nga kinabahan na so chineck ko na lahat ng kailangan and ni-review ko yung lesson script ko para ready na!

Wag magtatagalog! English lang talaga! All the time! Kahit during test call, English lang gamitin niyo.

Dress appropriately! Hindi kailangan naka suit and tie or naka long sleeveless. Ok na yung may collar or kahit simple T-shirt lang! Basta mukhang disente. And make sure na malinis yung background mo. And walang distractions!

Provided na ng RareJob kung paano yung lesson flow and yung actual lesson materials. Kasama na rin yung alloted time for each segment so just kept studying it and pwede niyo rin I-record yung sarili niyo habang nagco-conduct ng lesson. So you can check areas you need to improve on! Kung mabilis kayo magsalita o kung mabagal. At kung namama-ximize niyo yung lesson time.

Review the basic English grammar rules! Syempre importante ito!

Criteria for Evaluation

Dalawang beses kayong mag co-conduct ng demo lesson kasi 2 yung material. Parehas na importante pero mas kailangan niyo mag focus pagdating sa 2nd lesson kasi dun ite-test kung paano niyo i-aaply yung feedback na binigay sa inyo pagkatapos nung 1st lesson.

Kung sinabihan kayo na ang bilis niyo magsalita, bagalan niyo naman. Kung sinabihan kayo na masyadong one sided yung conversation. Ibig sabihin, ikaw yung palagi nagsasalita and hindi yung estudyante. Then next time, listen sa student and especially don't interrupt the student pag nagsasalita. Use the 70/30 talk ratio. 70% sa student then 30% lang sayo.

Kung ano yung instructions nung evaluator at yung feedback niya sa performance mo nung 1st lesson. Listen to it, follow and apply it for the 2nd lesson!

Yun lang muna for today. If makaisip pa ako ng tips, I'll post it next time.

[REPOST] Opening Payroll Account in BPI (RareJob Tutors)

Click the image to join RAREJOB! :)

A friend of mine, Tutor Ella, also applied to RareJob and fortunately she passed. We're now co-tutors and she allowed me to share her experience in opening a new payroll account in BPI for RareJob tutors.

o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o

In the FAQ section of RareJob, you can find the following:

How and when do I get paid?

The tutor fee is distributed every 10th of the month through direct bank transfer to either a BPI International (Bank of the Philippine Islands) or a PNB (Philippine National Bank) account. We provide tutors with an endorsement letter to help them open an account
What Bank account can I use?
RareJob provides an endorsement letter that tutors can download on the website. They can use the letter to open either a PNB or a BPI International account. Tutors should open an account under their registered name in RareJob.
What if I have an existing bank account, can I use it instead?
No, tutors should open a new account that will be used solely for RareJob.

o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o

We both chose to bank with BPI because before I started teaching, I already had a BPI account so I just had to link my payroll to my existing bank account. In Ella's case, her house was much closer to a BPI branch than to a PNB branch. So, easy choice.

REQUIREMENTS:

- RareJob endorsement letter

This is found on the RareJob website, there are two pages you need to download - Bank's Copy and Tutor's Copy. Check if your name and address is correct before downloading. If there are any errors, you can contact the Tutor Support for corrections.

- Two Valid Ids

Passport, Postal ID, Driver's License, etc. Any form of ID that has your picture and complete name. Although Ella submitted a Barangay Clearance and the bank accepted it even when it didn't have a picture.

- Proof of Billing

Electric Bill, Water Bill, Internet Bill, etc. Any kind of utility bill as long as it has your current residence on it. It doesn't even have to be in your name.

- (1) 1x1 Picture ID

- 100php Cash

PROCESS:

1) Go to your nearest BPI International Branch

2) Get a number for Customer Service from the security guards at the entrance

3) Wait until your number is called and when it's your turn:

4) Submit the all the requirements

5) Fill up the BPI Application Form

6) Sign the Signature Card

7) Have your assigned bank officer sign and stamped your Tutor's Copy of the RJ Endorsement letter

8) Pay 100php then you're done

Overall, Tutor Ella said that it was an easy and quick process although she had to wait for her turn for over 40 minutes since the client before her kept complaining about something repeatedly and delayed the queue.

Other than that, the application process took about less than 15 minutes. She applied on Tuesday and got her ATM card on Friday.

NOTE:

For new RareJob tutors, just follow the instructions in the website once you've received your ATM and bank account details. Once you've completed all the steps, just wait for approval and your Tutor Fee Page will be activated after a few days.

You can also enroll your Payroll Account for BPI Online Banking. Just follow the steps on the BPI website.

[REPOST] Part-Time Work at RareJob

Click the image to join RAREJOB! :)

WHY I APPLIED?

As I mentioned before, I wanted a part-time work so I could pay off all my CC debt but when I started teaching, I was already debt-free. I figured I should still continue not just for the money but also for the experience.

WHY RAREJOB?

There was no special reason for choosing RareJob out of all the other companies. I saw one of their ads, I did a quick research about the company and the reviews from other tutors. Not all of them were positive, there were negative things too but when I compared them to the reviews from other companies, I decided RareJob was the better choice for me.

Another factor was that my dear sister-in-law wanted to apply in RareJob too so we applied together. We figured that we could just try it out and if we didn't pass, we could just apply to another company.

APPLICATION PROCESS

In the same month of September, I applied and started teaching. The whole application process was pretty easy:

- Register

- Take and Pass Online Test

- Book A Schedule for Demo Lesson

- Conduct Demo Lesson

- If you Passed, Start Teaching!

I think it took about 10 days for me since I kept re-scheduling my demo lesson. I was nervous and so was my sister-in-law. We conducted our demo lesson on the same day but on different times. She had hers on the morning and because I had work that day, I scheduled mine on the evening.

Luckily, we both pass and we excitedly (and nervously!) prepared ourselves to start teaching.

OUR EXPERIENCE SO FAR

I'm two months in and so far, it's been a fun experience. I'm not as active as my sister-in-law yet. I only conduct about 2 lessons a day on weekdays and 5 each on weekends. I'm still finding the right schedule for me because at times I'm pretty lazy but luckily RareJob has a very flexible schedule.

I can choose my own schedule and there's no minimum hours of requirement to teach. I'm also earning decent money which goes straight to my emergency fund. As for my sister-in-law, she really loves teaching. She went from being a SAHM of three kids to being a WAHM!

I'll make a follow-up post about working at RareJob some time next year. I'm sure by that time I already found the right schedule for me. ;)
